It is very easy to have your flash drive, hard drive, or computer crash, get damaged, or have your flash drive or laptop get lost or stolen. And it always happens at the worst possible time.<br /><br />There are many different ways to backup your files. You can use an external hard drive, backup to a flash drive, or backup your files to the cloud. I use a mixture of both.<br /><br /><b>1. External Hard Drive </b>- an external hard drive is a great way to back up your files locally. This proves very useful if your computer goes down and you have no internet. Many of them come with software build in to set up automatic backups and Windows and Mac have automatic backup apps. You can even make an image of your hard drive so that you don't have to reinstall software if you need to start from scratch.<br /><br /><b>2. Flash Drive</b> - a flash drive can also be used for backup, but they are more expensive than hard drives for similar storage capacities. I do use a flash drive as a backup at school of my main files.<br /><br /><b>3. Cloud based backup</b> - this is my favorite way to backup my files because it is automatic, free, and I can sync my files to multiple computers which means I have access to them locally. They also allow me to access my files from any computer, or even smartphone, via the web (and smartphone apps).There are many different ones available. They all have some sort of free plan and many allow you to get extra free memory through referrals. You can also access these files through any web browser, and there are apps for smart phones. You can even access them with a mobile web browser if you don't have an app. You get 5GB for free and there are fee based plans with more storage. I can access my files anywhere, on any device, which makes it very convenient. You select the directories that you want to be backed up. The "Magic Briefcase" is the directory or folder you pick to be automatically backed up and synced. As soon as I save a file to that directory, it is uploaded to their servers.</div></div><div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><br /></div></div><div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">The Websync feature is also nice. If you are accessing your files through the website, you can select "Edit with websync" and a Java program will download a temp copy of your file, allow you to edit and save it and then upload the new version. So, here is my answer: (all of them are free)</div><div><br /></div><div>1. <a href="http://mail.google.com/">Email</a> - I use email for communication. All of my students have my school email address, and I give it out to parents also. I can send messages to my students, communicate with parents, and communicate with other educators. You can get a free email account from Google. </div><div><br /></div><div>2. <a href="http://www.evernote.com/">Evernote</a> - I use Evernote as a note taking system. I have my notes organized by topic. I have reference notes, lesson plans, tech tips, and much more on here. What I really love, is that I can access my notes from any internet enabled computer or cell phone. I also like the ability to "clip" web sites into a note in Evernote. What's great, is that hyperlinks on the web page are kept when clipped into Evernote. You can also attach files to your notes. Free accounts can only attach images (JPEG/PNG/GIF), audio (MP3, WAV, AMR), PDF, and digital ink files. I try to convert most of my files to PDF anyway for cross-platform support. (Here is some info on how to create PDF files for free on your <a href="http://educationaltechnologyguy.blogspot.com/2009/06/free-pdf-creation-and-merging.html">computer</a>, or <a href="http://educationaltechnologyguy.blogspot.com/2010/01/free-online-pdf-generator.html">online</a>. ) You can also share notes and notebooks with others.</div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size:100%;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" line-height: 18px;font-size:12px;"><b><br /></b></span></span></div><div><br /></div><div>3. <a href="http://www.google.com/ig">iGoogle</a> - I use iGoogle as my start page to keep myself organized. With one glance, I can see my task list, schedule (calendar), bookmarks, time/date, Gmail, RSS feeds and more. I can also access my Google Docs from this page. For more on iGoogle, go <a href="http://educationaltechnologyguy.blogspot.com/2009/09/igoogle-organize-yourself-on-one-page.html">HERE.</a> </div><div><br /></div><div>4. <a href="http://www.engrade.com/">Engrade</a> - Engrade is a free online gradebook for teachers. I have all of my classes listed here and each student is given an access code so that they can see their grades any time they want. I also give access codes to the parents so that they always know how their student is doing. It is accessable from any web enabled computer and you can generate multiple reports and export the data if needed.</div><div><br /></div><div>5a. <a href="https://www.sugarsync.com/referral?rf=c6g3ccjrtagq2">Sugarsync</a> - Sugarsync is an online system that backs up your files and allows you to access them from any web enabled computer or smart phone. There is a free, 2GB capacity account available. What is really great is that it keeps your files in sync among multiple computers. Make a change to a file on computer A, and it is automatically uploaded and sync'd with their servers and any other computers you have specified. You can even open/edit a file directly from their server and it will automatically sync the changes you make. I keep my school files on here so that I can work on them and access them at home and on any computer at school.</div><div><br /></div><div><div><div>5b. <a href="https://www.dropbox.com/referrals/NTU5Mjc0NTI5">Dropbox</a> is a service that allows you to sync your files on your computer with their system as a backup. This also allows you to access the files anywhere. You can also sync the files across multiple computers. This means that you have automatic backup of your files and 24/7 access to your files. I have it set up to sync a folder on my home computer and school computer so I don't have to worry about having multiple versions or forgetting a flash drive.</div><div><br /></div><div>There are also <a href="https://www.dropbox.com/referrals/NTU5Mjc0NTI5">Dropbox</a> apps for iPhone, Android, iPad and there is one coming for Blackberry. There is an independent app for Palm webOS, but you can also access the mobile site from any web-enabled phone. Imagine being able to access all of your files on your smartphone!</div></div><div><br /></div><div>One feature that is very nice is the fact that it works with network drives like we use in my district. Some of the other cloud file storage and sync systems can't work with network drives. I was very happy to see this was able to be done with <a href="https://www.dropbox.com/referrals/NTU5Mjc0NTI5">Dropbox</a>.</div></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>6. <a href="http://www.blogger.com/">Blogger</a> - Blogger is a free blogging tool from Google. I use it for this blog, as well as for a blog for each of my classes. These class blogs are a great resource for my students. I have important links on the side and then I post what we are doing in class, links for extra help, and more on there. My students have all subscribed to the blogs via email, so they get an email whenever I make a new post on the blog. Students can also hold discussions on the blog.</div><div><br /></div><div>7. <a href="http://sites.google.com/">Google Sites</a> - I use Google sites to create a free website for my classes. I have one website that I use for all of my clases - <a href="http://sites.google.com/site/dandradeedusite/Home">www.physicsmedic.org</a>. On the site I have class rules, reference information, links, and files from class (presentations, handouts, etc.). I also have sections for new teachers and about educational technology.</div><div><br /></div><div>8. Hardware: I have a teacher station computer in my classroom, along with 8 student desktop computers. I have a printer for the student computers and a printer for my computer. I also have an LCD projector connected to my computer, and a VCR and DVD player connected to the projector. I also use a Keyspan remote to wirelessly control my computer from anywhere in the room. Auxillary speakers are also a must. </div><div><br /></div><div>I also use a <a href="http://www.palm.com/us/products/phones/preplus/index.html">Palm Pre+ smart phone</a> to keep connected. I can access all of my files (and edit them), Google accounts, email, the web, and much more with it (it even makes phone calls).</div><div><br /></div><div>9. Other software: our school computers run Windows XP. I also use the following software on my school computer: <a href="http://www.google.com/chrome">Google Chrome web browser</a>, <a href="http://www.blogger.com/www.stardock.com/products/objectdock">Stardock Object Dock</a> (a great dock to launch programs from), <a href="http://www.blogger.com/picasa.google.com">Picasa</a> (photo organizing and editing), <a href="http://gs.fhtino.it/gdocbackup">GDoc Backup</a> (backup my Google Docs to the hard drive), <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/Downloads/powertoys/Xppowertoys.mspx">PowerCalc</a> (Microsoft Scientific/Graphing Calculator), <a href="http://www.openoffice.org/">OpenOffice</a> (office suite) and<a href="http://educationaltechnologyguy.blogspot.com/2009/06/free-pdf-creation-and-merging.html"> CutePDF</a> writer. All of this software is free.</div><div><br /></div><div>I have also switched to using<a href="http://aviary.com/"> Aviary's</a> clipping extension for Chrome to clip graphics from the internet and edit or modify them. </div><div><br /></div><div>So, you now know what I use for educational technology on a daily basis. New Teacher Advice

<span class="Apple-style-span" style=" color: rgb(51, 0, 51); font-family:'Times New Roman';font-size:13px;"><p style="text-align: center;margin-top: 0px; "><b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;">WELCOME NEW TEACHERS!</span></span></b></p><p style="margin-top: 0px; "><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;">As I was realizing that summer was almost up, I also realized that there will be a new batch of teachers to join our distinguished profession. So here it is, my advice to new teachers.</span></p><p style="margin-top: 0px; "><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;">Your best resource as a new teacher is yourself. Use what you learned in school. Seek out more information from colleagues and the Internet. Use your creativity. Remember what it was like to be a student yourself.</span></p><p style="margin-top: 0px; "><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;">Ask for help. Don't be afraid to ask other teachers for help. Do not isolate yourself in your classroom. Make connections with other teachers, whether it is in person, by email, Facebook, Ning, Twitter, web sites, or blogs.</span></p><p style="margin-top: 0px; "><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;">Don't reinvent the wheel. Use the resources that are available to you. Most textbooks now come with instructor resource CD-ROMs and companion web sites. Use the resources that they have and then modify them as needed. Search the Internet for lesson plan ideas, activities, classroom management tips, and other tips and tricks.</span></p><p style="margin-top: 0px; "><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;">Stay organized. You need to stay organized. Make sure you have a lesson plan guide and calendar of some sort. You can use a paper based planner and lesson planner or use an electronic or web-based system. Smartphones, such as those from Palm (Centro), RIM (Blackberry), and Apple (iPhone) are great for staying organized. You can also use online resources like Google, Yahoo, Evernote and others to keep your files, calendar, tasks, and lesson plans organized. </span></p><p style="margin-top: 0px; "><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;">Write things down and make sure you have your classroom materials organized and labeled.</span></p><p style="margin-top: 0px; "><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;">Take advantage of professional development opportunities. Your district and school will run professional development sessions, but don't limit yourself to those. Look for free online sessions, webcasts, conferences, and sessions run by your local educational resource agency.</span></p><p style="margin-top: 0px; "><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;">Join a professional society in your area. As a physics teacher, I have joined the National Science Teacher's Association (NSTA) and the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT). Find out what organizations are in your area and join them. You will find resources and contacts through these organizations.</span></p><p style="margin-top: 0px; "><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;">Read journals. Subscribe to and read educational journals. Most are free, so you don't have to worry about the money. There are journals on general education, educational technology, pedagogy, assessment, and just about every other area of education.</span></p><p style="margin-top: 0px; "><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;">Be creative with your lessons. Think outside the box. Come up with new, fun ways to teach the students. Use projects and project-based-learning as a way to engage and teach your students. You can find a huge number of resources and ideas for projects on the web.</span></p><p style="margin-top: 0px; "><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;">Read some books on education. There are tons of free resources, from software to web sites, that can help you in your classroom.</span></p><p style="margin-top: 0px; "><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;">Make connections with the secretaries and custodians in your building. They will be some of your best resources for supplies, ideas, and help.</span></p><p style="margin-top: 0px; "><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;">Make connections with local businesses, especially those that are related to your subject area. They can be a huge resource for guests, supplies and equipment, and funding. Many local businesses, such as Staples, have Teacher Appreciation Days with discounts and free gifts. Find out about these. Remind businesses that instead of throwing out things, they can donate usable items to your school as a tax write-off.</span></p><p style="margin-top: 0px; "><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;">Get to know the publisher's representative for your class's textbook. They can get you a lot of resources.</span></p><p style="margin-top: 0px; "><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;">Be flexible. Remember Murphy's law. Have plans for when your lessons run short or long, to deal with interruptions and fire drills, assemblies, and days when much of your class is absent because of a field trip. Have back up plans for everything and especially have backup plans in case of technology issues.</span></p><p style="margin-top: 0px; "><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;">Know your local and State curriculum. Know what is expected of you. Know what is expected of the students.</span></p><p style="margin-top: 0px; "><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;">Track your personal expenses and save receipts. I have a computer at home that I do a lot of work on, the Acer netbook for teaching EMS classes at different locations and doing work on the fly, and my computer at school. It was always a pain to keep these computers and the files in sync, but <a href="https://www.sugarsync.com/referral?rf=c6g3ccjrtagq2">SugarSync</a> has fixed that problem. <div><br /></div><div>I have the "Magic Folder" on each computer and <a href="https://www.sugarsync.com/referral?rf=c6g3ccjrtagq2">SugarSync</a> automatically keeps them all in sync. That means that I can work on the files on my home computer and it will automatically upload the new or modified file to <a href="https://www.sugarsync.com/referral?rf=c6g3ccjrtagq2">SugarSync's</a> servers and then when I turn on one of the other computers, <a href="https://www.sugarsync.com/referral?rf=c6g3ccjrtagq2">SugarSync</a> will automatically download and sync the new or modified file onto that computer. I can also access, edit, and save any file through the SugarSync web site on any computer.</div><div><br /></div><div>I have yet to need to use more than the 2GB free account, but I'm thinking of upgrading to the 30GB account ($49.99 for the year, or $4.99 per month) and keeping more files accessible.</div><div><br /></div><div>Try it out. I found it to be easy to use and a great resource. I will be sharing it with my students also, so that they can access their files at school so that they don't have to keep bringing in flash drives.</div><div><br /></div>
